Playing career

Tye McGinn entered the NHL when the Philadelphia Flyers picked him in the fourth round, 119th overall, during the 2010 draft. He played three seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Gatineau Olympiques before inking a three-year entry-level deal with the Flyers on July 14, 2011. His first NHL game came on January 22, 2013, against the New Jersey Devils, and he notched his first goal two nights later on January 26, 2013, beating Florida Panthers goaltender Jose Theodore. During a game on February 16, 2014, McGinn got into a fight with Connor Murphy of the Portland Pirates, landing multiple punches at center ice. He was tossed from the contest and hit with a fighting major. That scrap was part of a larger late-game line brawl that piled up 329 penalty minutes and led to six suspensions; McGinn himself sat out one game. On July 2, 2014, the Flyers shipped him to the San Jose Sharks for a third-round pick in the 2015 draft. He cracked the Sharks' opening-night roster for the 2014-15 season but, after 32 games, was claimed off waivers by the Arizona Coyotes on March 2, 2015. McGinn signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 21, 2015. He spent most of the 2015-16 campaign with the Syracuse Crunch, suiting up for only two Lightning games. Tampa Bay gave him a one-year, two-way extension on June 28, 2016, and another on August 17, 2017. On November 14, 2017, the Lightning traded him back to Arizona alongside Michael Leighton in exchange for Louis Domingue. Before the 2018-19 season, McGinn signed a one-year deal with the Manitoba Moose on September 11, 2018. He worked on the checking line, posting two goals and six points in 26 games, before being dealt to the Chicago Wolves on January 3, 2019, for considerations tied to an NHL trade between the Moose's affiliate, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Vegas Golden Knights. After going unsigned to start the 2020-21 season, he moved overseas, signing with the Fischtown Penguins of the DEL on January 12, 2021, for the remainder of the year. On June 23, 2022, he signed a one-year contract with ERC Ingolstadt, also of the DEL.
