Wolf spiders get their name from the Ancient Greek word for "wolf," a nod to their sharp eyesight and quick, powerful hunting style. These spiders are solitary creatures that hunt alone and rarely build webs. Some are opportunistic, pouncing on prey they stumble across or chasing it for short distances, while others wait near the entrance of a burrow for something to pass by. They help keep insect populations in check and are often seen as beneficial in farms and gardens because they prey on pests.
Wolf spiders can be confused with nursery web spiders, but there are key differences. Wolf spiders carry their egg sacs attached to their spinnerets at the tip of the abdomen, whereas nursery web spiders hold theirs with their chelicerae and pedipalps. Also, two of a wolf spider's eight eyes are noticeably larger than the rest, while nursery web spiders have eyes that are all roughly the same size. This eye arrangement also sets them apart from grass spiders, which look similar.
Their body size, not counting legs, ranges from less than 10 mm to 35 mm. Their eight eyes are arranged in three rows: four small eyes on the bottom, two very large eyes in the middle (the distinguishing feature), and two medium-sized eyes on top. Unlike many arachnids with poor vision, wolf spiders see very well. They have a reflective tissue called the tapetum lucidum in four of their secondary eyes, which causes eyeshine when a light is shone at them—the glow comes from light reflecting directly back toward the source. Among all spider groups, wolf spiders have the third-best eyesight, behind jumping spiders (which see color) and huntsman spiders.
Wolf spiders are unique in how they handle their eggs. The female carries a round, silken egg sac attached to her spinnerets, holding her abdomen up to keep it from dragging. Even with this burden, she can still hunt. Once the spiderlings hatch, they climb onto her back and crowd there for several weeks until they are big enough to leave on their own. Because they rely on camouflage for protection, their coloring tends to match their favorite habitat rather than being flashy.
The largest wolf spiders belong to the genus *Hogna*. In the U.S., *H. carolinensis* (the Carolina wolf spider) is the biggest, with a body over 2.5 cm long and a solid black underside. It is sometimes mistaken for *H. helluo*, which is smaller and has a variegated underside with reds, oranges, yellows, and black. Some species, like *H. carolinensis*, dig deep, tubular burrows where they hide. Others, like *H. helluo*, take shelter under rocks or other natural cover. As with many spiders, males sometimes wander into homes and buildings in autumn while searching for mates.
Wolf spiders inject venom if they are continually provoked, but bites usually cause only mild pain and swelling. In the past, some South American and Australian species were blamed for necrotic bites, but further study showed those problems likely came from other spider families or had other causes.
These spiders live in a wide variety of coastal and inland habitats, including shrublands, woodlands, wet coastal forests, alpine meadows, suburban gardens, and homes. Spiderlings travel through the air, so wolf spiders have broad distributions. While some species need specific microhabitats like stream-side gravel or montane herb fields, most are wanderers without permanent homes. Some build burrows that may be left open or fitted with a trap door. In arid areas, species construct turrets or plug their holes with leaves and pebbles during rainy seasons to avoid flooding. They are also often found in man-made spots like sheds and outdoor equipment.
Many wolf spider species have complex courtship behaviors and secondary sexual traits, such as bristle tufts on the legs or special colorations, mostly seen in males. These traits vary by species and often involve modifications to the first pair of legs—like elongated bristles, swollen leg segments, or longer legs compared to the others. Some mating behaviors are common across genera, while many are species-specific. In the well-studied genus *Schizocosa*, all males produce a seismic component in their courtship display, such as stridulation or drumming their forelegs on the ground, though some also rely on visual cues.
