Production
In November 2017, The Mark Gordon Company announced a feature film adaptation of the musical, with Sankoff and Hein writing the screenplay and Christopher Ashley directing. By April 2019, the intention was to film in Gander with lesser-known actors and local residents as extras. On February 2, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on film and performing arts, those plans were cancelled in favor of a live film recording of the stage production with the Broadway cast, to be released in September 2021.
The film was produced and financed by Entertainment One and RadicalMedia, filmed in May 2021 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater before an invited audience including 9/11 survivors and first responders. Ashley directed, Gordon remained producer, and Jennifer Todd, Bill Condon, and Junkyard Dog Productions joined the producing team. Sankoff, Hein, Jon Kamen, Dave Sirulnick, and Meredith Bennett served as executive producers. The production employed 222 people. Apple TV+ acquired distribution rights on April 30, 2021.
