Pete Frank (August 20, 1930 – June 22, 2005), legally named Mordecai Pittman Frank III, was a NASA engineer. He served as a flight director for the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission and as the American lead flight director for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.
Born in Bryan, Texas, Frank was named after his grandfather and father but was always called "Pete." He graduated from Denton High School in 1948 and earned a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1952. After college, he spent four years as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps, later serving in the Reserve and reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. While working at the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, he earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University.
Frank joined NASA in 1962. In early 1966, he was one of 44 finalists who underwent two months of medical testing at Brooks Air Force Base for NASA Astronaut Group 5, but was not selected.
