Antiques Roadshow expert and former DJ.

Last updated

Ronnie Archer-Morgan, born in 1950, is a TV antiques expert and presenter. He has been a regular on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow since 2011, hosted the 2023 Channel 4 series Millionaire Hoarders, and served as a valuer on Find it, Fix it, Flog it.

Early life and education

Ronnie Archer-Morgan came into the world in 1950. His mother, Lizzie, was a wealthy Sierra Leonean, and his father, Ronald, was a British engineer working in Sierra Leone. When Lizzie became pregnant, the couple moved to Britain for a fresh start. Tragically, Ronald died in a car crash before Ronnie was born, which caused Lizzie to suffer a breakdown.

As a result, Ronnie was placed with foster parents. At age three, he was moved to a National Children's Home in Southport, Merseyside. Shortly before his sixth birthday, he was sent back to live with his mother and half-sister Lynette. There, his mother abused him, starting with bullying and escalating to physical torture and multiple attempted murders.

These crimes went unnoticed because Lizzie was popular and respected. To escape his home life, Archer-Morgan visited museums, which sparked his love for antiques. When his mother remarried an abusive man, he and his sister were taken back into care when he was eleven, staying for another five years. At seventeen, he won a place at Hornsey College of Art but dropped out after a few weeks, saying he was bored by simply copying others.

Career

Ronnie Archer-Morgan’s path to antiques started with a DJ gig at Soho’s Marquee Club. A hairdresser friend nudged him into that trade, and within eighteen months he was styling at a top Knightsbridge salon. During lunch breaks he would hunt through local shops and markets for antiques, then sell them to his clients for a profit—a sideline that grew into a career spanning more than three decades. He later consulted for Sotheby’s on their wristwatch and costume jewellery collections and opened his own antiques gallery in Knightsbridge.

In 2011 he joined the Antiques Roadshow, covering the miscellaneous category but focusing mainly on tribal art and weaponry. A 2019 episode, part of the show’s fortieth anniversary, brought him face-to-face with a collector who had Sooty and Sweep glove puppets. Her father had made them for Harry Corbett, whom Archer-Morgan had met in 1955 during a visit to the children’s home where he lived. After that broadcast, a letter arrived from his former foster family, leading to a reunion with a childhood friend he had lost touch with when he was moved from the home.

Today he consults for Dore & Rees auctions in Frome, Somerset, and works independently for private clients. His autobiography, Would It Surprise You To Know...?, came out in 2022, its title taken from his Roadshow catchphrase. In August 2023 he appeared in the three-part series Millionaire Hoarders. During the first episode, at Craufurdland Castle in Scotland, he uncovered a John Constable painting worth up to two million pounds—previously dismissed as a fake—that could help the family avoid selling their eight-hundred-year-old estate due to upkeep costs.
