Making and release

Waits explained he changed the title from Woyzeck because he did not think anyone would know who Woyzeck is.[2][1] The album was recorded in the same sessions as Alice, sharing the same musicians and much the same instrumentation.[3][4] Both albums were released simultaneously on May 9, 2002 on Waits' label Anti.[1] The score is the same as Wilson's play, but Waits stated "I just changed the title"[2]

The songs on Blood Money debuted during the year 2000 within Wilson's Woyzeck staging, which had its first performance at the Betty Nansen Theatre in Copenhagen during November 2000.[2][4] Georg Büchner's play served as the foundation for Wilson's opera, and that same play had previously inspired Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck.[2]

What the cited sources add

Costa described "Misery Is the River of the World" as featuring marimba, bass clarinet, calliope wheezes, and percussion from an Indonesian pod.[3][4] Christgau observed that "Lullaby" ventures into new territory with its quiet lyrics, and "Another Man's Vine" achieves a tragic quality by rejecting contempt.[5][6]
