James Henry Breasted was an American archaeologist, Egyptologist, and historian. Born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1865, he was the first American to earn a doctorate in Egyptology, completing his PhD at the University of Berlin in 1894 under the instruction of Adolf Erman. He then joined the faculty of the University of Chicago, where he became director of the Haskell Oriental Museum in 1901. In 1905, he was promoted to full professor, holding the first chair in Egyptology and Oriental History in the United States. Breasted was a dedicated field researcher in Egypt and the Levant, focusing on recording and interpreting ancient writings from sources he feared might be lost. He published a major compilation of hieroglyphic inscriptions, *Ancient Records of Egypt*, in 1906, which remains a key collection of translated texts. He also popularized the term "Fertile Crescent" to describe the archaeologically vital region of the Near East. In 1919, he founded the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, a research center for the interdisciplinary study of ancient civilizations, with support from John D. Rockefeller Jr. That same year, he was elected to the American Philosophical Society. Breasted married Frances Hart in 1894, and after her death in 1934, he married one of her sisters. He died on December 2, 1935.
