Lore & Background

The emotional core of the Chronicles lies in the relationship between Elfangor and his young son, Ax. As the war turns against them, Elfangor makes the harrowing decision to send Ax away on a small ship to escape, knowing he will likely die fighting. This act of love ensures the survival of the Andalite line but leaves Ax with the trauma of losing his father and his home, setting the stage for his character development throughout the main series as he struggles to find a new purpose among humans.

Reader's Guide

The story begins with Ax and Elfangor recounting the early days of the Yeerk threat from the safety of a prison ship orbiting Earth. They flashback to the discovery of the Hork-Bajir homeworld by a Yeerk scout, leading to the enslavement of that species.

Elfangor leads a rescue mission to free the Hork-Bajir, but the operation goes wrong when the Yeerks reveal their true military might. The Andalite squad is overwhelmed, and Elfangor realizes they cannot win without sacrificing everything. He orders his men to retreat while he holds the line.

In the final act, Elfangor sends Ax away in a small escape vessel just as the Hork-Bajir homeworld falls. Elfangor is captured by the Yeerks and brought to Earth, where he becomes the first Andalite prisoner. The story ends with the revelation that this history is being told to the Animorphs to help them understand their enemy.
