Gorban

A broken Andalite warrior trapped in a war between two minds, serving as the Yeerks' most dangerous advisor.

Gorban is a unique and tragic figure within the Yeerk hierarchy, serving as the primary antagonist to the Animorphs during their early struggles against the invasion force. Unlike typical Controllers who are human hosts forced into servitude, Gorban was an Andalite warrior who voluntarily allowed a Yeerk to inhabit his body after being captured and tortured by the Yeerks. This act of desperation made him a 'Controller' in name only, as he retained his own consciousness alongside the alien parasite, creating a fractured mind that struggled between two wills.

Lore & Background

His role as a Controller was pivotal because he possessed the tactical knowledge of an Andalite warrior combined with the strategic ruthlessness of the Yeerks. He advised Visser Three on how to counter the Animorphs, using his understanding of their morphing abilities and Andalite culture to predict their moves. However, this duality eventually became a liability; the constant internal conflict weakened his mental stability. The Animorphs discovered that Gorban was not entirely evil but a victim trapped in a nightmare, leading to a complex confrontation where they had to decide whether to save him or end his suffering.

Reader's Guide

Gorban's unique condition did not grant him special powers beyond those of a standard Andalite or Yeerk Controller, but it introduced severe psychological limitations. The primary constraint was the constant mental warfare between host and parasite; while they could cooperate tactically, emotional stress often caused them to lose focus or act unpredictably.

The Animorphs overcame this by exploiting his internal conflict. During their final confrontation, they targeted Gorban's remaining humanity, appealing to his desire for freedom rather than attacking him physically. This psychological approach caused the Yeerk inside to hesitate, breaking its control and allowing the Andalite consciousness to briefly take charge.

Ultimately, there was no way to separate the two without killing both. The 'cure' for a Controller with such deep integration is non-existent in this universe; the only resolution is death. The Animorphs were forced to make the heartbreaking choice to end his life, which ironically freed him from the torture of sharing his mind forever.
