The Zeta Project is an American animated science-fiction series from Warner Bros. Television Animation. It aired on Kids' WB from January 27, 2001, to August 10, 2002, as the seventh show in the DC Animated Universe (following *Batman: The Animated Series*, *Superman: The Animated Series*, *The New Batman Adventures*, *Batman Beyond*, *Static Shock*, and *Justice League*) and a spin-off of *Batman Beyond*. Robert Goodman created the series.
The main character, Infiltration Unit Zeta, is a humanoid robot (a synthoid) built by the National Security Agency for infiltration and information gathering. After Zeta is ordered to eliminate a target he discovers is innocent, he has an existential crisis about goodness and the value of life, and can no longer kill. He abandons his mission and goes rogue. While searching for his creator, Dr. Selig, Zeta is chased by NSA agents led by Agent Bennet and aided by a 15-year-old runaway named Rosalie "Ro" Rowan. The series was canceled after two seasons and 26 episodes.
The show draws inspiration from *Frankenstein*, *Blade Runner*, and *The Fugitive*. It follows Zeta and Ro as they try to prove he is non-violent, while the NSA agents believe terrorists he was investigating before going rogue have reprogrammed him. To clear his name, Zeta and Ro look for the elusive Dr. Selig. Goodman originally pitched a darker series, but Kids' WB wanted shows for a younger audience and picked it up thinking, "It's a robot, and it's a teenage girl. How much fun can that be?" The staff promised most locations would not be as dark as *Batman Beyond*'s Gotham City. This made it harder to execute Goodman's original ideas about dark government, misuse of technology, and social and political issues. Despite the lighter tone, Kids' WB still found the series too dark. Fan lore often claims the show was nearly canceled after the September 11th attacks due to its terrorism and NSA plotlines, but in reality, it was canceled after two seasons due to low ratings and network decisions.
