In a futuristic time, the TigerShark team are humans and unidentified aliens who use a device called the Fish Tank to transform into hybrids of marine animals. The TigerSharks' base is SARK, a spaceship that can function underwater. The ship contains the Fish Tank, its own A.I., and other research facilities. The TigerSharks operate on Water-O, a planet that is almost completely covered by water and inhabited by a fish-like species called the Waterians. The TigerSharks arrived there on a research mission and ended up serving as the protectors of the planet against the evil Mantannas, led by T-Ray. To make matters worse, T-Ray ends up freeing Captain Bizzarly and his pirate crew from their icy imprisonment. The team members include Mako, Walro, Rodolfo 'Dolph', Octavia, Lorca, Bronc, Angel, Gupp, and the SARK's artificial intelligence.

Reader's Guide

TigerSharks represents Rankin/Bass's attempt to replicate the success of their earlier series ThunderCats and SilverHawks by applying a similar transformation concept to a marine environment. The series is notable for being part of The Comic Strip, a syndicated block of four animated shorts. Though it lasted only one season of 26 episodes, it has maintained a cult following. The series is currently owned by Warner Bros. A TigerSharks action figure line was made by LJN, which also made toys for ThunderCats.

Production Lineage & Ownership

TigerSharks emerged as the next chapter in Rankin/Bass's ambitious run of action-oriented animated series, arriving in 1987 under the distribution banner of Lorimar-Telepictures. The studio had already built a recognizable brand with ThunderCats and SilverHawks, and TigerSharks carried forward that same formula of powered-up hero teams with animalistic transformations. Much of the original voice cast returned, with Larry Kenney, Peter Newman, Earl Hammond, Doug Preis, and Bob McFadden lending their voices to new characters. The series ran for a single season of twenty-six episodes and was packaged as one segment within the anthology program The Comic Strip, alongside Street Frogs, The Mini-Monsters, and Karate Kat. While the creative direction came from Rankin/Bass, the actual animation was outsourced to Pacific Animation Corporation, a Japanese studio. Today, the series sits in the Warner Bros. Animation catalog, a consequence of the Lorimar-Telepictures and Warner Bros. merger that absorbed the entire 1974-to-1989 Rankin/Bass library.

The World of Water-O

The series is set in a futuristic era on a planet called Water-O, a world so thoroughly submerged that its surface is almost entirely ocean. The native inhabitants, known as Waterians, are a fish-like species who govern their civilization through a ruling council that includes members named Pappagallo, Hydra, and Goby. The TigerSharks first arrived on Water-O carrying out a research mission, but their role quickly shifted from scientists to defenders when hostile forces began threatening the planet's survival. Their mobile headquarters is SARK, a versatile spaceship capable of operating both above and below the waterline. Inside SARK, the crew finds the Fish Tank—the transformation device that converts team members into their marine-animal hybrid forms—alongside a resident artificial intelligence and a suite of research facilities. The entire operational concept revolves around this aquatic environment, making the team's hybrid abilities not just a power-up but a practical necessity for surviving and fighting in Water-O's endless seas.

The TigerShark Crew

The core team blends military leadership, scientific expertise, and youthful energy. Mako, a gifted scuba diver, serves as field commander and transforms into a mako shark hybrid, gaining extraordinary underwater speed and the ability to slice through metal with his forearm and head fins. Walro, the team's scientific and mechanical genius who actually built the Fish Tank, takes on a walrus form and carries a multi-weapon cane. Dolph, the SARK's lieutenant, becomes a highly maneuverable dolphin hybrid capable of firing a powerful water jet, though he must surface regularly because he cannot breathe in his aquatic state. Octavia, the ship's captain and chief strategist, transforms into an octopus hybrid with tentacles replacing her hair. Lorca, the strongest member and primary mechanic, shifts into an orca hybrid and also requires frequent surfacing for air; he speaks with a distinct Australian accent. Rounding out the crew are teenagers Bronc, an adventurous seahorse hybrid, and his more responsible sister Angel, an angelfish hybrid, plus Gupp, a Cocker Spaniel with pinniped-like flippers and pin teeth.

Dual Antagonists & the Betrayal Plot

TigerSharks' conflict is structured around two rival villain factions that have agreed to a temporary alliance. The Mantannas are an alien sea-creature race displaced after their home planet dried up, and they require water-breathing apparatus to survive on land. Their leader, T-Ray, is a manta ray hybrid who wields a whip, supported by aides including Wall-Eye, a frog hybrid who can hypnotize by spinning his eyes, and Shad, a grouper hybrid whose belt fires electrical blasts. The second faction belongs to Captain Bizzarly, a pirate captain plagued by aquaphobia who once controlled all criminal activity on Water-O's oceans before the Waterians froze him and his crew in ice. T-Ray freed them, expecting a joint conquest, but Bizzarly's crew—including the winged sea dragon Dragonstein, first mate Spike Marlin, the samurai-clad Soulmate, and the towering Grunt—secretly intends to betray the Mantannas once Water-O is under their control. Both groups ultimately plan to destroy the TigerSharks, making the heroes the common target of two scheming armies.
