Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 is an animated science fiction television series created by Mattel, Nelvana, and Nerd Corps Entertainment, based on the Hot Wheels toy line. The series follows expert driver Vert Wheeler as he discovers a dimension called a Battle Zone and assembles a racing team to compete against robotic Sark and animal-like Vandals for Battle Keys that determine the fate of Earth. It aired on Cartoon Network in the United States starting with a two-episode preview on August 24, 2009, and officially debuted on August 29, 2009.
Background
The series centers on Vert Wheeler, who while driving in the Salt Flats encounters a Battle Zone and meets a Sentient named Sage. Together they form Battle Force 5, a team using weaponized vehicles to secure Battle Keys from the Sark and Vandals. The team operates from Vert's garage in Handler's Corners, accessing Battle Zones through tornado-like portals called Storm Shocks. The Battle Zones were created by Sentients, who had blue and red factions living on separate homeworlds until the Vandals took over the blue homeworld.
The second season, titled 'Fused,' began airing September 18, 2010, and concludes with the Sentient war ending and the Ancient Ones awakening. The feature film 'Total Revolution' addresses the Ancient Ones, called Karmordials, who created the Sentients and were banished to the Primordiverse. The series does not follow or reference the World Race or AcceleRacers franchises, except for the character Vert Wheeler, and has no continuity with the toy line.
