In the year AD 2225, humanity has colonized the solar system, and space travel is commonplace. The Liebe Delta, a space station in Earth's orbit, trains space pilots and crew. During a vacation period called the Dive Break, the station is sabotaged by an explosion and decompression, leaving most staff unconscious. The station begins falling into the Geduld, a mysterious plasma sea that appeared in the solar system. The remaining instructors sacrifice themselves, but a hidden ship called the RYVIUS activates and rescues the surviving students.

The students aboard the RYVIUS must navigate their new reality as they are stranded in space and abandoned by governments. The series focuses on protagonist Kouji Aiba, a student in the General Course who tries to maintain order, and his younger brother Yuki, a skilled pilot. Other key characters include Aoi Housen, a childhood friend; Ikumi Oze, a charismatic pilot who becomes authoritarian; and Airs Blue, who introduces a controversial points system. More recently, on August 1, 2026, Discotek Media announced at Otakon that they would release the series on Blu-ray in North America, marking a new high-definition era for the show. Beyond the anime itself, a two-volume manga adaptation by Shinsuke Kurihashi ran concurrently with the broadcast in 1999–2000, published by MediaWorks. Telling the voyage from the perspective of Aoi Housen and her roommates rather than the anime's predominantly male cast, the manga introduced plotlines unseen on screen.
