Plot

Velma receives a letter from her family’s lawyer, Cuthbert Crawley, informing her that she has inherited a castle from her great uncle in the Pennsylvania town of Transylvania, which is heavily influenced by German culture. When the gang visits Crawley’s office, Velma refuses the inheritance, saying she wants nothing to do with her uncle, which confuses her friends. Crawley understands her decision but then mentions that the property carries a curse: anyone affected by it will lose whatever they hold most dear. As the group leaves, a figure in an iron mask, later revealed to be the ghost of Velma’s baron ancestor, destroys the Mystery Machine. The wreckage leaves a warning telling them to stay away from Transylvania, but Fred insists they go there to catch the culprit.

With no other option, the gang takes an express train to Transylvania. Under pressure from her friends, Velma admits the truth about her family: her real last name is Von Dinkenstein, and the baron’s ghost is likely her ancestor Basil, who supposedly created a monster that inspired Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein. The train suddenly accelerates, and as the gang helps passengers to safety in the last car, they find the Baron at the front instead of the conductor. He sabotages the control panel, announces that the Von Dinkenstein curse has begun, and vanishes. The gang manages to save the last car and everyone inside just as the train derails and crashes into a clock tower, destroying it.

When they arrive in town, they meet Inspector Krunch, the burgermeister, and a hunchback named Iago, who leads them to the castle. There they meet the housekeeper, Mrs. Vanders. In the castle’s laboratory, they discover the supposed monster preserved inside a block of ice. Disturbed by this, Velma vows to repeat the experiment to prove the monster isn’t real. As the rest of the gang leaves, Mrs. Vanders shows Velma a machine that hypnotizes her.
