Freakazoid! is an animated TV series that blends superhero action with comedy, created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini and developed by Tom Ruegger for the Kids' WB block on The WB. It follows the title character, a wild teenage superhero who protects Washington, D.C., and also includes short segments featuring other heroes. The show was produced by Warner Bros. Television Animation and Amblin Entertainment, marking the third collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros. Animation after *Tiny Toon Adventures* and *Animaniacs*.
Bruce Timm, known for his work on the DC Animated Universe, initially planned a straightforward superhero adventure cartoon with comedic touches, but executive producer Steven Spielberg pushed for a full comedy. The series shares a humor style with other Ruegger-led shows like *Animaniacs*, using slapstick, fourth-wall breaks, parody, surreal jokes, and pop culture references.
The show was one of five cartoons that launched Kids' WB on September 9, 1995, alongside *Animaniacs* (picked up after Fox canceled it), *The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries*, *Pinky and the Brain*, and *Earthworm Jim*. It ran for two seasons totaling 24 episodes, ending on June 1, 1997. Though it struggled in ratings initially, reruns on Cartoon Network and a dedicated fan base turned it into a cult hit. The hero is the alter ego of Dexter Douglas, a geeky 16- or 17-year-old student at Harry Connick Jr. High School. His name plays on the alliterative names common among superheroes. Dexter gains his powers from a computer bug triggered when his cat, Mr. Chubbikins, accidentally types a secret key sequence. Freakazoid has enhanced strength, endurance, speed, and agility, plus access to all the Internet’s knowledge. He cannot fly, but often runs with his arms out, making whooshing sounds with his mouth to pretend he is. His base, the Freakalair, parodies the Batcave and was built by his mute butler Ingmar; it includes a "Hall of Nifty Things to Know" and a mad scientist lab. His main weakness is graphite bars charged with negative ions, as he tells Armando Guitierrez, head of Apex Microchips.
