Scorpion Demoness
A scorpion spirit whose venom could wound even the Buddha.
The Scorpion Demoness, or Xiezijing (蝎子精), is a key villain in the 16th-century Chinese novel *Journey to the West* and its adaptations. In her original form, she is a giant scorpion the size of a pipa. She is unique in the story for being able to injure both the Buddha and Sun Wukong, whose bodies are normally as tough as metal, because the venom in her tail can pierce them.
In the novel, she lives in Pipa Cave on Venom Mountain, near the Women's Kingdom. As Tang Sanzang and his disciples prepare to leave that kingdom, she suddenly appears and kidnaps him, taking him to her cave. There, she tries to seduce him and pressures him to marry her, leading him to a bridal suite she has prepared. She spends the night tempting him, growing increasingly frustrated when he refuses. Their playful exchange is interrupted by Sun Wukong, who stops her teasing of his master. Angered, she orders her servants to confine Sanzang and challenges Wukong to a fight with a trident. The battle moves outside, where Zhu Bajie joins Wukong. Despite a long, fierce fight, neither side wins. Eventually, she stings Sun Wukong on the head with her venomous tail, causing him such pain that he and Bajie retreat.
Helpless, Sun Wukong is guided by Guanyin Bodhisattva, who tells him to seek help from Mao Ri Xingguan and reveals the demoness’s past. She once lived in Leiyin Temple. During a sermon by the Buddha, she accidentally caught his attention, and after an accidental push, she stung his left thumb with her tail, causing him great pain. The Buddha ordered his disciples to capture her, but she escaped to Pipa Cave. Sun Wukong then visits the Heavenly Palace to invite Mao Ri Xingguan. Afterward, Wukong and Bajie lure the scorpion spirit out of the cave, and Mao Ri Xingguan subdues her by transforming into a giant rooster with two combs.
The Qing dynasty Quanzhen Taoist master Wu Yizi commented that when scorpions become spirits, their poison is unmatched, and when women become licentious and wicked, they harm others even more. The Monkey King is injured on the head, Zhu Bajie on the mouth, and even the Tathāgata feels unbearable pain, while Bodhisattvas dare not approach. This describes her poison as irresistible. She is not a woman shaped like a scorpion, but a woman who acts like one.

Reader's Guide
The Scorpion Demoness is significant for her unique power: she is the only being in Journey to the West who can harm both the Buddha and Sun Wukong, whose bodies are otherwise invulnerable. Her defeat requires divine intervention: Guanyin Bodhisattva directs Sun Wukong to seek Maori Xingguan, who subdues her by transforming into a giant rooster with two combs. The Qing dynasty commentator Wu Yizi describes her poison as irresistible, noting that she represents a woman who acts like a scorpion, seducing and harming those who stray from their true purpose. Essayist Li Jing, however, sees her love for Tang Sanzang as remarkably pure, based on shared values rather than lust. Professor Zhu Hongbo observes that unlike other demons who rely on magical treasures, the Scorpion Demoness's power comes from her own abilities, making her martial skills top-notch. Her legacy endures in modern media, including films such as Dream of Monsters: Scorpion Demoness and the Kingdom of Women (2020) and Great Dream Journey to the West 3: Adventures in the Kingdom of Women (2017).
