Afterlife School System
A limbo where souls overcome trauma before passing on.
The Afterlife School System is the primary setting of Angel Beats!, a high school in the afterlife that serves as a type of limbo for people who have experienced trauma or hardships in life. It is populated by fabricated students and teachers, whom Yuri refers to as "non-player characters" (NPCs). The environment is designed to help individuals overcome their regrets before passing on and being reincarnated.

Lore & Background
The afterlife school is a structured environment where souls who have died with unresolved regrets are sent. Upon arrival, Otonashi lost his memories of his life after dying, but later partially regains them with the aid of deputy president Ayato Naoi's hypnosis, and remembers the rest of his past while in Kanade's presence. The true purpose of the afterlife is revealed by Kanade: it is a place to help others overcome their regrets and move on. Mysterious shadow-like entities begin appearing, attacking residents by turning them into NPCs.
Yuri destroys the source of the shadows, which were created by computers programmed to activate when love was detected in the afterlife to prevent it from becoming a paradise. Her affection for the SSS members allows her to finally overcome her regret. The system is not about punishment but about facilitating acceptance; when a soul fully understands and accepts their past, they pass on, as seen when Iwasawa passes on after achieving satisfaction through her music, and when Yui moves on after Hinata fulfills her desire for marriage.
Reader's Guide
The Afterlife School System operates on a metaphysical principle where emotional closure dictates physical existence. Unlike traditional religious concepts of judgment, this realm focuses on psychological healing rather than moral scoring. Conflict arises not from divine punishment but from human resistance to change; the SSS fights an enemy that is actually part of their own salvation process. The school setting symbolizes youth and potential, representing a second chance to finish what was started in life.
The gradual return of memory acts as a narrative device for character growth, forcing individuals to confront pain they previously suppressed. This structure suggests that peace cannot be forced but must be earned through introspection. Ultimately, the system reveals that death is not an end, but a transition requiring preparation. The rules are less about authority and more about natural law governing spiritual maturity.
By accepting their mortality and past actions, souls transcend the need for this physical manifestation, proving that true freedom comes from letting go of attachment.
