The arrow of Genghis Khan: Jebe, the greatest cavalry general in history.

Last updated

Jirqo'adai, also referred to as Jebe or Jebei, was a notable general under Genghis Khan and died around 1224.[1] Before entering Temüjin's service, Jebe was a member of the Mongol Besüd tribe and had fought among the Tayichi'ut.[2] Due to his unconventional and bold tactics, Jebe has been called "the greatest cavalry general in history".[3]

Life and work

During that invasion, he commanded the left wing alongside Subutai and captured two fortresses by circling around the wall to the east.[4] In winter 1211, Jebe used a feigned retreat over 100 miles to lure out defenders and seize Liaoyang.[5][4] He incited religious revolts between Buddhists and Muslims to conserve manpower and overwhelmed Kuchlug's 30,000-man force.[6] During the invasion of the Khwarezm Empire in 1219, Jebe led a diversionary force over the Tian Shan mountains in winter.[7]

Jebe and Subutai later pursued the Shah to prevent him from rallying new armies.[7] Jebe likely died around 1224 after the Battle of the Kalka River, with mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.[8] Within three years, Jebe rose to command the left army wing during the 1211 invasion of Jin China, becoming one of Genghis Khan's top commanders.[9] In 1218, Jebe was assigned to conquer Kara-Khitai and defeat Kuchlug, leading a force of only 20,000 men.[6]
