Athenian sacred ships

Ancient Athenian triremes with religious and governmental duties.

Last updated

Athenian sacred ships were vessels, often triremes, that served religious functions such as processions, embassies, and festival boat races. The most famous were the Paralus and the Salaminia, which also acted as messenger ships for the Athenian government. Other notable sacred ships included the Delia, a triakonter believed to be Theseus's ship, and the Theoris, a trireme kept for sacred embassies.
