Geography (Ptolemy)

Ptolemy's *Geography*, written in Greek in Alexandria around 150 AD, is a compilation of the Roman Empire's geographical knowledge. It functions as a gazetteer, an atlas, and a guide to mapmaking. The work was a revision of a lost atlas by Marinus of Tyre, updated with new principles and information from Roman and Persian sources. Its Arabic translation by al-Khwarismi in the 9th century greatly influenced Islamic geography and cartography. Later, along with the works of Islamic scholars and the more accurate data in Alfraganus's commentary, it became highly influential in medieval and Renaissance Europe.

The text is divided into three sections across eight books. Book One is a treatise on cartography and chorography, explaining how Ptolemy organized his data. Books Two through the start of Book Seven form a gazetteer listing the longitude and latitude of places in the known Roman world. The rest of Book Seven describes three map projections of varying complexity. Book Eight is an atlas of regional maps, including captions to ensure accuracy during copying, and it formed the basis for the later *Table of Noteworthy Cities*.

No Greek manuscript of the *Geography* survives from before the 13th century, though fragmentary papyri of related works, like the *Table of Noteworthy Cities*, exist from as early as the 3rd century. The Byzantine monk Maximus Planudes searched for a manuscript in 1295, and one of the earliest surviving texts may be from those he assembled. He had to redraw maps from the coordinates in the text, and later scribes, like Athanasius for Emperor Andronicus II, copied these new maps. The three earliest surviving texts with maps come from Constantinople, based on Planudes's work. The first Latin translation, by Jacobus Angelus in Florence around 1406 or 1407, likely had no maps, though a Greek copy of Planudes's maps had reached Florence in 1397.

Scholars have constructed a family tree of surviving manuscripts. Berggren and Jones connect manuscripts U, K, F, and N to Planudes's activities. From a related manuscript, R, V, W, and C descend, but their maps were copied poorly or not at all. Manuscript X (Vat.Gr.191) is considered the most important for the text because it is the only one uninfluenced by Planudes's Byzantine revisions. Berggren and Jones argue that no ancient maps survived to guide Planudes; his success proves Ptolemy successfully encoded the map in words and numbers, and all later maps derive from Planudes's reconstructions. Mittenhuber divides the lost original into two recensions: Ξ and Ω. Recension Ω contains most manuscripts, split into groups Δ and Π. Group Δ includes the earliest parchment manuscripts (U, K, F) from the late 13th century. Recension Ξ is represented only by codex X, which contains many unique place names and coordinates that cannot be explained as simple errors.

References to ancient copies exist, such as a letter by Cassiodorus around 560 AD mentioning a codex of Ptolemy. The existence of ancient recensions different from the surviving tradition is also seen in the epitomes of Markianos, which preserve a spelling of "Britannic Isles" that the surviving manuscript tradition does not.

The Geography consists of three sections, divided among 8 books. Book I is a treatise on cartography and chorography, describing the methods used to assemble and arrange Ptolemy's data. From Book II through the beginning of Book VII, a gazetteer provides longitude and latitude values for the world known to the ancient Romans (the 'ecumene'). The Geography's translation into Arabic by al-Khwarismi in the 9th century was highly influential on the geographical knowledge and cartographic traditions of the Islamic world. Alongside the works of Islamic scholars—and the commentary containing revised and more accurate data by Alfraganus—Ptolemy's work was subsequently highly influential on Medieval and Renaissance Europe. From a sister manuscript to UKFN descends R, V, W & C, however the maps were either copied defectively or not at all. Recension Ω contains most of the extant manuscripts and is subdivided into a further two groups: Δ and Π. Group Δ contains parchment manuscripts from the end of the thirteenth century, which are the earliest extant manuscripts of the Geography; these are U, K & F. Recension, Ξ, is represented by one codex only, X. Mittenhuber agrees with Berggren & Jones, stating that 'The so-called Codex X is of particular significance, because it contains many local names and coordinates that differ from the other manuscripts ... which cannot be explained by mere errors in the tradition.'

Ptolemy's personal history remains one of the great puzzles of ancient scholarship. Neither his exact birth year nor his birthplace is confirmed by any primary source. A 14th-century astronomer named Theodore Meliteniotes claimed he was born in Ptolemais Hermiou, a Greek city in Egypt's Thebaid region, but this late attestation lacks supporting evidence. What can be established with confidence is that he lived and worked in or around Alexandria, in the Roman province of Egypt. His Latin name, Claudius, strongly suggests Roman citizenship, a status that translator Gerald Toomer speculates may have been granted to an ancestor by either Emperor Claudius or Nero. He wrote in Koine Greek, drew on Babylonian astronomical data, and was well-versed in Greek philosophical traditions. In roughly half of his surviving works, he addresses a figure called Syrus, about whom almost nothing is known beyond a shared interest in astronomy.

Ptolemy devoted the greatest share of his intellectual energy to astronomy, and his crowning achievement, the Mathēmatikē Syntaxis, stands as the sole surviving comprehensive ancient treatise on the subject. The work represents a landmark synthesis: Babylonian astronomers had long developed arithmetical methods for predicting celestial events, yet these lacked any underlying physical model of the cosmos. Early Greek thinkers, by contrast, offered elegant geometrical explanations of planetary motion but could not make reliable predictions. Hipparchus was the first to attempt a genuine merger of these traditions, constructing geometric models that both described the arrangement of stars and planets and enabled calculation of their movements. Ptolemy built upon this foundation, deriving his models for the Sun, Moon, and each planet from observations spanning more than eight centuries. The result was the only mathematically coherent geocentric model of the Solar System produced in antiquity, a framework that would dominate Western and Islamic scientific thought for over a millennium.
