Playing career
Shawn Thornton began his hockey journey with the Oshawa Minor Generals in the OMHA's Eastern AAA League. The Peterborough Petes selected him in the ninth round, 145th overall, during the 1995 OHL Priority Draft. After going undrafted in the 1996 NHL Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs picked him 190th overall the following year, but he never suited up for them. Toronto traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks partway through the 2001–02 season. Over the next six years, he bounced between the NHL and AHL with the Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks, finally lifting the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2006–07. On July 1, 2007, he inked a three-year, $1.5 million contract with the Boston Bruins. During his seven seasons in Boston, he captured a second Stanley Cup in 2010–11, setting personal bests with 10 goals, 10 assists, 20 points, and a plus-8 rating. After the 2013–14 campaign, Boston told him he would not be brought back. He then signed a two-year deal with the Florida Panthers and later extended for one more year. On April 6, 2017, Thornton announced his retirement effective at season's end, playing his final game on April 8. He also revealed he would take a business role in the Panthers' front office.
Executive career
After retiring, Thornton was named vice president of business operations for the Panthers. In April 2018, he became Senior Vice President of the Panthers. Over eight years with the organization, he served in various roles including Chief Revenue Officer. He was part of the Panthers' first two Stanley Cup victories in 2024 and 2025, as well as a run to the Finals in 2023. Following the 2024–25 season, he left the Panthers to join the NBA's Atlanta Hawks as Senior Vice President and Chief Partnership Officer.

Thornton started the Thornton Foundation in 2013 to support research for Parkinson's disease and cancer cures. His cousins include lacrosse players Zack and Bill Greer; Zack plays for the San Diego Seals, while Bill works as an assistant coach for the same team after retiring.
