The Accüsed
Crossover thrash band with a zombie mascot
Last updated
The Accüsed formed in 1981 on Whidbey Island, originally naming themselves Gain Green before settling on The Accüsed.[1][2] Blaine Cook came up with the idea for the zombie mascot Martha Splatterhead, and Tommy Niemeyer drew the character, which appears on the majority of the group's albums and merchandise.[3]
Making and release
The band's hybrid musical formula featured unusual choking-sound vocals, muted buzz-saw guitars, dark metallic riffs, and rapid-fire double-kick drumming.[3] According to reviewer Jeb Branin, the album The Return of Martha Splatterhead received a 0.0 rating in the zine Northern Metal, which made him want to buy it.[4][5] Branin called the album "a masterpiece of hardcore hysteria."[4] Between 1982 and 1984, John Dahlin served as the band's lead singer.[2]
Southern Lord Records put out the band's sixth LP, The Curse of Martha Splatterhead, in 2009.[6]
What the cited sources add
A review described the band's live performances as "a frenzy of epileptic gyrations" with Blaine's high-flying leaps being the highlight.[4][5] The same review stated that even in today's underground, one cannot find a more devastating band than The Accüsed.[4][5] Sputnikmusic stated that the group deserves increased recognition and ought to be acknowledged as early contributors to crossover thrash.[7] Although numerous punk and metal acts name The Accüsed as an inspiration, the band has mostly stayed outside the mainstream.[7]
