3rd & Bird is a children's animated television series created by Josh Selig and directed by Jennifer Oxley. Produced by Little Airplane Productions, which opened a second studio in London to create the show, it aired on the BBC's CBeebies channel from 1 July 2008 to 31 July 2010. The series revolves around a community of birds and their adventures, using a distinctive animation style called 'photo-puppetry' that employs photos of real animals moved via Adobe After Effects.

Lore & Background

The series used 'photo-puppetry', an animation style created by Jennifer Oxley that was also used for Little Airplane's previous show Wonder Pets! and the scene transitions on Oobi. BBC Worldwide acquired global distribution rights in October 2007. In 2009, Treehouse TV acquired Canadian broadcast rights, and in 2010, Disney Channel bought US broadcast rights, airing it on Disney Junior from September 2011. The program was also rolled out to foreign countries including the United States, where it aired dubbed into American English.

The Art of Photo-Puppetry

3rd & Bird distinguishes itself in children's animation through a striking visual technique. Jennifer Oxley, who directed the series, developed a method she calls photo-puppetry, in which still photographs of real animals are brought to life using Adobe After Effects. Instead of relying on conventional hand-drawn or fully rendered character animation, the show animates actual bird photographs, lending the cast a tactile, almost documentary texture while still permitting movement, expression, and interaction.

This same approach had already proven effective on Little Airplane Productions' earlier series Wonder Pets! and in the scene transitions of Oobi, cementing a recognizable studio identity. To meet the production demands of 3rd & Bird, Little Airplane Productions opened a second studio in London, a move that underscored the project's scale. The series was created by Josh Selig, and the pairing of his narrative vision with Oxley's animation craft yielded a look that felt simultaneously natural and playful—a fitting aesthetic for a show built around real bird species given life in a treetop neighborhood.

A Treetop Family and Their Friends

The emotional core of 3rd & Bird is its close-knit cast of bird characters inhabiting a treetop community. At the center sit Samuel, a green lovebird voiced by Sam Lewis, and his younger sister Muffin, a pink lovebird played by Eden Jarrett. Samuel, the eldest sibling, assumes a big-brother role, continually attempting to teach Muffin responsibility. Because she is not yet old enough to fly, Muffin typically rides on his back and addresses him with the affectionate nickname Samo.

Their best friend is Rudy, a cockatoo who visually resembles a cockatiel, voiced by Morgan Gayle and distinguished by a bracelet of colored beads on her ankle. The group's teacher is Mr. Beakman, a wise yet somewhat pompous toucan voiced by Michael Fenton Stevens, who serves as the community's parental authority and harbors a fondness for mariachi bands. Rounding out the main ensemble are Mrs. Billingsley, a non-flying New Zealand gardening kiwi and the oldest resident; Missy, a fashionable great blue turaco with a thick French accent; and Quinn, a teenage puffin inventor whose gadgets feature in the younger birds' daily activities. Samuel and Muffin's parents, voiced with Northern English accents, appear rarely but care deeply for their children.

Learning Through Bird-Sized Problems

From its very first press release, 3rd & Bird was positioned as a charming animated series all about community, and that philosophy drives every episode's structure. The format consistently presents one or more characters with a problem they must resolve, and the solutions always hinge on the social skills that pre-school children need to navigate the world around them. Rather than delivering explicit moral lessons, the show embeds cooperation, empathy, sharing, and conflict resolution into the natural interactions of its bird cast.

A disagreement between Samuel and Rudy, or a situation where Muffin's inability to fly creates a practical challenge, becomes the vehicle for modeling the kind of interpersonal skills a three- or four-year-old is expected to develop. The series ran for a total of 52 episodes across two seasons between 2008 and 2010, and included a two-part Christmas special titled A Very Squooky Christmas. Supporting characters like Baby Jordan, Mr. Beakman's nephew who mimics his uncle's big vocabulary, and Elliot, a worm who befriends the young birds, add layers of relationship-building that reinforce the show's central message: that solving problems together is what makes a community work.

From CBeebies to the World

Originally broadcast on the BBC's CBeebies channel from 1 July 2008 through 31 July 2010, 3rd & Bird quickly found an audience far beyond the United Kingdom. BBC Worldwide secured global distribution rights in October 2007, setting the stage for international expansion. In 2009, Canadian broadcaster Treehouse TV picked up the series, and in 2010 Disney Channel acquired US broadcast rights, eventually airing the show on Disney Junior beginning in September 2011, dubbed into American English. The program was rolled out to numerous foreign markets, giving pre-school viewers worldwide access to the treetop community.

The show's commercial footprint grew alongside its broadcast reach. In January 2009, BBC Worldwide announced a merchandise line that would include wooden stacking toys, pull-along vehicles, play sets, musical instruments, and wheeled toys such as trikes, scooters, and ride-ons, with the full product range hitting shelves in spring 2010. Two compilation CDs featuring the 3rd & Bird theme song alongside other CBeebies tracks were also released: CBeebies: Song Time in 2010 and CBeebies: The Album in 2012. The soundtrack was further enriched by the whistling of world champion musical whistler Michael Barimo, and guest star Ziggy Marley lent his voice to Ziggy the Parrot, a singing Jamaican parrot who appeared in the series.
