Babysitter Massacre

A low-budget slasher homage to 1980s sorority horror films.

Henrique Couto wrote and directed the 2013 horror film Babysitter Massacre. Three sequels—Babysitter Massacre II: Slay Belles, Babysitter Massacre III: Overnight, and Babysitter Massacre IV: Heavy Metal—were crowdfunded via Kickstarter in 2018. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Couto authorized a spinoff book series with author David O’Hanlon to expand the franchise until filming could resume. These currently include Babysitter Massacre: Daddy’s Little Killer, Babysitter Massacre: Family Splatters, Babysitter Massacre: Camp Carnage, and Babysitter Massacre: Murder Cove.

Plot

On Halloween, a babysitter receives threatening text messages and is soon attacked by a man in a white mask, who duct tapes her to a chair, rips out three of her fingernails, and slits her throat. Elsewhere, Angela talks with her neighbor Mr. Walker, whose daughter April was abducted seven years ago and has recently been declared deceased in absentia. Angela was in the same babysitters club as April, and after April’s disappearance every club member except Angela blamed Bianca, who was with April when she vanished.

To cheer up Bianca, Angela invites her to a party. Meanwhile, the masked killer murders another girl in the woods, then breaks into a house and kills a couple, mutilating the girl with a straight razor before slashing her throat. Angela and her friend Lucky prepare for the party as the killer butchers another girl and her co-worker in an office. Bianca, who had just argued with the victim, spots the murderer leaving the building and tries to follow him but loses him.

The killer continues his rampage; Bianca later visits Angela but storms off when Arlene taunts her with a Ouija board. Bianca decides to check on other babysitter club members with her ex-boyfriend Tyler, suspecting the masked man may be the one who kidnapped April. After massacring six people, the killer breaks into Angela’s house and chloroforms Angela, Lucky, and Arlene. They awaken in the basement, where Lucky says their captor will free Angela and Arlene if they kill her with a hammer.

Arlene reluctantly does so. Bianca has Tyler drop her at Angela’s house, where Mr. Walker hints he murdered April before knocking Bianca unconscious.

Reception

Gordon Sullivan of DVD Verdict responded positively to the film, calling it a gem made by people who love the genre and have the skills to craft a low-budget homage that gets it right. He noted it would not change anyone’s life but would be appreciated by those who fondly remember sorority slasher films. Mike Watt of Film Threat described it as a direct homage to the subgenre of 1980s slashers, particularly Sorority House Massacre 2, and said it delivers what its title promises to its intended audience.

Ian Jane of Rock! Shock! Pop! observed that the opening scene features nudity and a murder, and that the film offers plentiful nudity and nasty gore scenes. He noted the movie shifts from playful to malicious in the last twenty minutes, which may surprise some viewers.

Jane found the acting fairly average for a low-budget movie, though Marylee Osborne showed some range in a stereotypical tough-girl role. He concluded that while the film lacks suspense and is not a standout horror movie, it is interesting and entertaining as a leering, trashy exploitation film with random humor contrasting with serious murder set pieces.
