Chat Pile formed in February 2019, taking their name from piles of chat, byproducts of lead-zinc mining common in Northeastern Oklahoma. The members grew up in different parts of the state: Raygun Busch from Ponca City, Luther Manhole from Moore, and brothers Stin and Cap'n Ron from Asher. They adopted stage names to avoid identification by their employers. Their debut EP *This Dungeon Earth* was released in May 2019, and their first live concert was in July 2019 at 89th Street in Oklahoma City. Initially rejected by the local music scene, which a member claimed revolved around hardcore punk and shoegaze, the band gained promotion when *This Dungeon Earth* topped Rate Your Music's weekly charts. Origins, the Name, and Early Struggles

The band's name references "piles of chat," the mineral byproducts of lead-zinc mining that dot the landscape of northeastern Oklahoma. The members initially adopted their stage names as a practical shield: they wanted to keep their employers from recognizing them. Stin also serves as the group's manager. Vocalist Raygun Busch has pointed to Big Black as the band's single greatest influence. The Flenser's own description channels Godflesh's oppressive weight, Jesus Lizard's vulgar absurdity, and Sonic Youth's post-modern experimentation. Guitarist Luther Manhole adds that post-punk, nu metal, and grunge all bleed into the sound, while bassist Stin cites Korn "with no shame" but concedes most nu-metal after 1999 is "completely unlistenable." Label Ventures and Collaborative Projects

In July 2025, Chat Pile announced Dungeon Earth, their own boutique label, debuting with two tape-and-digital-only releases, Blood at Night and Blood at Night II, under the moniker "Chat Pile (+-)." The records feature noise, ambient, and improvised tracks pulled from the Cool World sessions. A hundred physical tapes were made available on Bandcamp and sold out almost immediately, with the remaining copies reserved for the Cool World tour. The band also expanded its collaborative scope: in October 2025 they released In the Earth Again, a full album with guitarist Hayden Pedigo, distributed simultaneously by The Flenser and New York's Computer Students. In February 2026, the single "Masks" appeared on Sub Pop, paired with a B-side cover of Nirvana's "Sifting." By June 2026, "Deep Blue" was out as the lead single for their fourth album, Who Loves the Sun, which dropped on September 4, 2026.
