Dexter: New Blood

Dexter: New Blood is a crime drama mystery miniseries developed by Clyde Phillips for Showtime. It continues the story of the original *Dexter* series (2006–2013), with Michael C. Hall returning as Dexter Morgan and Jennifer Carpenter appearing as an imaginary version of his dead sister, Debra. The events take place ten years after the original series finale, and the miniseries aired on Showtime from November 7, 2021, to January 9, 2022.

Ten years after faking his death in a hurricane, Dexter now lives in the fictional small town of Iron Lake, New York, under the alias Jim Lindsay. He works as a clerk at a wilderness sporting goods store, is in a relationship with the town’s police chief, Angela Bishop, and has been successfully suppressing his urge to kill. He often talks to an imaginary version of his deceased sister, Debra. In the first episode, his estranged son, Harrison Morgan, arrives unexpectedly with unclear intentions. A series of incidents in Iron Lake makes Dexter worry that his own "Dark Passenger"—and possibly his son’s—will surface.

The main cast includes Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan / Jim Lindsay, Jack Alcott as Harrison Morgan, Julia Jones as Police Chief Angela Bishop, Johnny Sequoyah as Audrey Bishop, Alano Miller as Sergeant Logan, Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan, and Clancy Brown as Kurt Caldwell. Special guest stars are David Zayas as Angel Batista and John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell (the Trinity Killer). Recurring roles include David Magidoff as Teddy Reed, Katy Sullivan as Esther, Michael Cyril Creighton as Fred Jr., Gizel Jiménez as Tess Silvera, Gregory Cruz as Abraham Brown, Jamie Chung as Molly Park, and Shuler Hensley as Elric Kane.

The original series finale—where Dexter becomes a lumberjack in Oregon—was polarizing, according to Michael C. Hall. He described it as "mystifying," "confounding," "exasperating," and "frustrating." Fans often asked Hall about a follow-up. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips, who left after season 4, had discussed possible redemption arcs for Dexter over the years but couldn't find a suitable path. On July 1, 2019, Showtime president Gary Levine contacted Phillips, saying the time felt right to bring the show back and asking if Phillips could develop something. Phillips wrote a preliminary script that Hall loved.
