Reception

Jim McLennan from Girls with Guns noted that the action felt restrained, with little gunplay and minor martial arts that were not particularly memorable, and that the sexual scenes revealed their made-for-TV origins through sheets that appeared velcroed to the actress's breasts or elbows positioned in front of them. McLennan nonetheless found enough in the central character to want to see more. Charles Tatum from Tatum Reviews Archive gave the film two out of five stars, stating the story had been done to death and that the filmmakers could not decide on an audience, switching between sex scenes and cutesy moments between the killer cyborg and an adorable child lifted from Terminator 2.

Nathan Rabin from The A.V. Club described the film as pouncing on every futuristic-android cliché, with a moribund pace that robbed it of energy, and called it a dud even as leering masturbation fodder, criticizing the director's ability to film sex scenes that titillated no one and covered more flesh than a convent in Alaska. Robert Pardi from TV Guide gave the film two out of four stars. Chameleon was nominated for two awards: an OFTA Television Award for Best Makeup/Hairstyling in a Motion Picture or Miniseries, and a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie/Pilot/Mini-Series or Series - Supporting Young Actor for Eric Lloyd.
