Literary significance and reception
The reviewer for SFRevu noted that the collection has a low bar to entry, as none of the action depends on the main Ring of Fire series, and that Cooper explores a part of the world rarely mentioned. The Midwest Book Review stated that both segues expand the Ring of Fire universe into new or previously limited geography and culture, built on real events enhanced by historical speculation with a Grantville twist. The Fistful of Wits reviewer strongly recommended the book, though he had not expected it to be a series of mostly interconnected short stories and observed that, as expected in such a collection, it did not tell the whole story of any character; he liked the settings, characters, and where Cooper took them. 1636: Seas of Fortune barely missed the Locus Trade Paperback List in 2014 but was labeled a runner-up.
