Production
Fred Olen Ray has stated that the film originated from sets left over from Roger Corman's The Masque of the Red Death, which were scheduled for demolition. Ray decided to use them for a sword and sorcery film, Wizards of the Demon Sword, shooting two days with actors including Russ Tamblyn. After completing that film in four days, he had five days of camera equipment rental remaining and $19,000 left, prompting him to make another movie, which became Bad Girls from Mars. Inspired by Hollywood Boulevard (1976), he created a story about making a movie. The filmmakers wanted Adam West and Burt Ward, leading to references such as Batgirls from Mars and bat symbols, but those actors were unavailable. Ray notes it was one of the first films to mention Ed Wood. The working title was Emmanuel Goes to Hollywood.
