Plot
Dr. Benson, a friend of charter pilot Bruce Gentry, is taken by a villain known only as the Recorder, who gives all commands through recorded messages. The Recorder forces Benson to finish work on flying saucers that are launched and steered electronically. Industrialist Paul Radcliffe hires Bruce to look into the saucers, hoping they can be used for business. The saucers need a mineral called Platonite.
The Recorder's only supply, an old mine on property owned by Jaunita and Frank Farrell, is empty, so he has to steal more from the U.S. government. As Bruce gets closer, he learns the Recorder is actually Dr. Benson. One of Benson's men, Krendon, sends a deadly saucer to attack the Panama Canal. Bruce flies his plane into the saucer, jumps out with a parachute, and the saucer explodes.
Back at the hideout, the saucer controls blow up, killing all the enemy agents. At the end of chapter 14, Bruce rides a motorcycle off a cliff. In chapter 15, an animated drawing shows him surviving by using a parachute hidden under his jacket. The cliffhangers in chapters one and twelve are nearly the same.
