Beach House

American dream pop band formed in Baltimore in 2004.

Last updated

Victoria Legrand (vocals, keyboards) and Alex Scally (guitar, keyboard, backing vocals, drum programming) met in Baltimore's indie scene and formed the American dream pop band Beach House in that city in 2004; James Barone (drums, percussion, bass), who had toured with them since 2016, became an official member in 2022.[1] According to journalists and critics, the band has been seen as revitalizing the dream pop genre for younger audiences, particularly those in the millennial generation.[1] Hip-hop and R&B artists such as The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar have incorporated Beach House's music into their own work as samples.[2]

Making and release

Victoria Legrand moved from Paris to Baltimore in 2004 after being dissatisfied with theater school, and through a friend was introduced to Alex Scally later that year.[3] In September 2009, the duo signed onto independent record label Sub Pop, marking their departure from Carpark.[4] Their third album Teen Dream was officially released through Sub Pop on January 26, 2010, becoming their first album release through the label.[5] Recording of the debut album took place in 2005, lasting two days, using a 4-track tape machine in Scally's basement.[6]

Carpark Records put out the band's first album, titled Beach House, on October 3, 2006.[7] February 26, 2008 saw the release of Beach House's second LP, Devotion, which marked their first entry on the US Billboard 200 chart.[8] After Teen Dream, their fourth studio album Bloom came out in May 2012 and reached the number seven position on the Billboard 200.[9] Two albums were issued by the band in 2015: Depression Cherry arrived in August, and Thank Your Lucky Stars was put out unexpectedly two months afterward.[9]

What the cited sources add

The Cleveland Scene account notes that Beach House formed in Scally's hometown of Baltimore in 2004.[10] The American Songwriter article states that Beach House began with a lo-fi indie album recorded on a 4-track.[11] That article also describes Beach House as "like a silent movie where laughter looks like crying".[11] The Spin article reports that a purported new song "Helicopter Dream (I'm Awake)" was not a new song, according to an email from Beach House's representatives.[12]
