Plot
The neighborhood kids keep smashing Louie's Sweet Shop front window with baseballs. The Bowery Boys figure a vacant lot nearby could solve the problem. During a heavy rainstorm, Slip and Sach head to Long Island to talk to the lot's owners, the Gravesend family. Every single one of them is completely crazy. Dr. Derek Gravesend wants a brain for his gorilla. His brother Anton needs a brain for his robot, Gorog. Their sister Amelia requires fresh meat for her man-eating tree, and niece Francine is a vampire. The family invites Slip and Sach to stay overnight, but the boys quickly figure out the danger and a wild chase tears through the house. Louie, Butch, and Chuck come looking for them and get swept into the chaos too.
Reception
Critical reception was negative. Variety called it a below-par entry that goes overboard on malapropisms, with weak production and repetitive action needing editing. Milton Luban of The Hollywood Reporter agreed, stating the thin situation is sparsely developed and Leo Gorcey's malapropisms become unintelligible. Popular reception, however, was exceptional. Edward Bernds claimed the film was the best moneymaker of all the Bowery Boys pictures, noting that the juxtaposition of the Bowery Boys and monsters appealed to audiences. The film became a kiddie-matinée perennial, playing in theaters for the next 14 years.
