A24 Music

Music division of the independent entertainment company A24.

Last updated

Based in New York City, A24 is an independent American entertainment company whose activities include film distribution and the production of both films and television shows.[1] The Italian A24 motorway, which Daniel Katz was driving on when he decided to start the company, inspired the name A24; Katz founded the company in 2012 alongside David Fenkel and John Hodges.[1]

Key facts and history

The company launched a television division in 2015 and changed its name from A24 Films to just A24 in 2016.[2][3] A24 became a production studio in 2016 and fully financed its first feature film, Moonlight, in partnership with Plan B Entertainment.[1] In June 2024, A24 raised $75 million from Thrive Capital, valuing the company at $3.5 billion.[4] Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges established A24 on August 17, 2012, with initial financial support coming from Guggenheim Partners.[5][6]

The year 2013 marked the start of A24's film distribution activities, and its first movie shown in theaters was Roman Coppola's A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III.[7] Agreements with Amazon Prime Video and DirecTV Cinema were finalized by A24 during the latter part of 2013.[2] At the 95th Academy Awards in March 2023, A24 made history as the first independent studio to claim the awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and all four acting categories in a single ceremony.[8]

What the cited sources add

According to TheWrap, A24 acquisition executive Noah Sacco made the talent agency rounds in search of "action and big IP projects" in summer 2023.[9] A Vulture article reports that A24's television division, run by longtime partner Ravi Nandan, focused mostly on stand-up specials and comedies in its first five years before pushing into dramas.[10] According to a Hollywood Insider article, A24 is an independent American entertainment firm headquartered in New York City, focusing on film distribution and the production of films and television content.[1] The same article explains that the company's name originates from the Italian A24 motorway, which Katz was traveling on when he conceived the idea for the business.[1]
