Jim Jefferies is an Australian stand-up comedian, actor, and writer who created and starred in the FX sitcom Legit (2013–2014) and hosted the Comedy Central late-night show The Jim Jefferies Show (2017–2019). In 2023, he began hosting The 1% Club.
Early life
Born Geoffrey James Nugent in Sydney, Australia, in February 1977, Jefferies grew up in St Ives on the Upper North Shore. His mother taught school, while his father, originally from Roma, Queensland, worked as a cabinet maker and maintenance man. He later moved to Perth to train in musical theatre and classical music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, dropping out months before finishing. He has two older brothers: Scott, an investment banker, and Daniel, a police inspector with New South Wales’s Public Order and Riot Squad.
Career
Jim Jefferies got his start in stand-up comedy after leaving university, first heading back to his hometown of Sydney before moving to the UK. For a short time, he performed under his birth name, Geoffrey Nugent, but when an MC introduced him as "Godfrey Nugget," he switched to a stage name built from his first and middle names: Jim Jefferies. His early sets were built around one-liners, but he moved to storytelling once he started doing hour-long shows.
One of his first UK gigs was in October 2003 at the Glee Club in Birmingham, part of the Birmingham Comedy Festival. He first got international notice in 2007 when a heckler attacked him onstage at the Manchester Comedy Festival; video of that moment ended up in his act and on his 2008 DVD Contraband. American audiences started paying attention in 2009 after his debut HBO special, I Swear to God. Over the years, he has played the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Just for Laughs, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Reading and Leeds, and Glastonbury.
His Netflix special Freedumb dropped in July 2016, and he followed it with the Unusual Punishment Tour, then filmed This Is Me Now at the Hammersmith Apollo in London in January 2018. He wrapped up the Night Talker Tour with a final show in Melbourne on December 17, 2018. In 2019, Just for Laughs in Montreal named him Stand-up Comedian of the Year. In April 2024, he kicked off the Give 'Em What They Want tour in South Africa, moved to Australia in August, and then co-headlined the Charm Offensive Tour across Canada with Jimmy Carr in September and October.
Legit
In November 2024, it was announced he would host a stand-up series for the Seven Network in 2025 called Jim Jefferies and Friends. His FX comedy series Legit premiered on January 17, 2013, with a second season starting on FXX on February 26, 2014. The show got positive feedback from the disabled community for how it depicted people with mental and physical disabilities, but it was cancelled after two seasons.
