Series overview

The Hamptons was produced by Gloria Monty, who had previously revitalized the daytime serial General Hospital. The series was recorded on videotape, giving it a visual style similar to daytime soap operas, and featured actors with daytime television backgrounds, including Leigh Taylor-Young, Michael Goodwin, John Reilly, and Bibi Besch. It aired on Wednesday nights before reruns of Dynasty. The central conflict involved the Chadway and Duncan-Mortimer families competing for control of the Duncan-Chadway department chain.

The Chadway family consisted of managing director Peter Chadway, his wife Lee, son Brian, and daughter Miranda. The Duncan-Mortimers included alcoholic heiress Adrienne, her husband Jay (president of the chain), and Tracy, Adrienne's daughter from a prior marriage who was engaged to Brian. Other characters were Dr. David Landau, his lawyer girlfriend Cheryl Ashcroft, and rival businessman Nick Atwater of Syndrex. Fran Carlon played recurring housekeeper Ada.

By the final episode, Peter Chadway was accused of murdering personnel director Penny Drake, and Jay Mortimer was revealed to have forced stepdaughter Tracy into an incestuous relationship. The series was intended to return if ratings were sufficient, but no further episodes were made, leaving the cliffhangers unresolved.
