Banshee was formed by guitarist Terry Dunn in the spring of 1986, drawing members from Midwest touring acts Lick, Frodo, Granmax, and Crypt Keeper. Their first EP, Cry in the Night, was released later that year. Bassist Chuck Hopkins left shortly after and was replaced by Bill Westfall. In 1986, Banshee's song 'We Want You' appeared on the compilation Metal Massacre No. 8. The band recorded their debut album, Race Against Time, at Record Plant Studios and released it in September 1989 on Atlantic Records' Titanium label. They parted ways with Atlantic shortly after.
