Plot
David Silver struggles with a Mozart sonata and seeks help from piano teacher Holly Marlow, whom he discovers is blind. He develops romantic feelings for her, neglecting girlfriend Donna Martin. Holly tells David he is confusing protectiveness with romance. Meanwhile, Steve Sanders and Brandon Walsh stop at a coffee house after a car breakdown; Steve realizes it is a gay establishment and spots fraternity president Mike Ryan. Mike asks Steve to keep his sexuality secret. Later, after being gay-baited by fraternity brother Artie Devers, Steve outs Mike. Artie tries to expel Mike, but Steve argues for brotherhood and the fraternity votes to keep him.
Impact
Gender studies writer E. Graham McKinley analyzed "Blind Spot" for its portrayal of gender relationship dynamics, focusing on David's interaction with the disabled Holly and a date between Donna and recurring African-American character D'Shawn Hardell. In partnership with the Los Angeles chapter of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the producers sponsored screenings at three gay and lesbian youth centers in the Los Angeles area, followed by question-and-answer sessions with executive producer Chuck Rosin and guest star Todd Bryant.
