Device (metal band)
American industrial metal side project of Disturbed's David Draiman.
Device was an American industrial metal side project formed by Disturbed vocalist David Draiman and Geno Lenardo, who had previously played guitar for Filter. The group put out a single album, also called *Device*, in 2013, and then split up.
The project began after Disturbed went on hiatus in late 2011. In May 2012, Draiman announced he was working with Lenardo, who had first approached him about contributing to a track for the *Underworld* film series. Draiman said the collaboration felt natural and that Lenardo was a strong songwriter. The music was intended to have an electronic, industrial metal sound reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails or Ministry, not dubstep. By early June 2012, the pair had demo vocals for five songs: “You Think You Know,” “Recover,” “Hunted,” “Vilify,” and “War of Lies.”
The self-titled album was released on April 9, 2013. Its first single, “Vilify,” debuted on radio and online on February 19, accompanied by a music video and a behind-the-scenes clip. Before the album came out, the band streamed “You Think You Know,” “Penance,” and a cover of Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne’s “Close My Eyes Forever” online. The album featured guest appearances from Geezer Butler, Glenn Hughes, M. Shadows, Serj Tankian, Tom Morello, and Lzzy Hale (who sang on the “Close My Eyes Forever” cover).
For live performances, the touring lineup included drummer Will Hunt and guitarist Virus, but not Lenardo. Device played its first show on April 10, 2013, in Mobile, Alabama, and later appeared on the 2013 Gigantour festival. In a 2015 interview, Draiman said he had no plans to make another Device album.
