Dawn of Ashes

Dawn of Ashes is an American industrial metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2001. The band's style blends horror-themed lyrics and visuals with industrial and melodic black metal structures. The name is an allegorical metaphor meaning "beginning of the end."

The band began as a dark electronic project, often classified as Terror EBM or aggrotech, heavily sampling horror films. After several unstable lineups, Joey-Tekk and Bahemoth joined. The 2005 release *Sacred Fever* established the band's horror-driven sound and themes. This album led to a deal with German label NoiTekk, with US distribution through COP International and Russian distribution via Gravitator Records. The follow-up, *In the Acts of Violence* (2007), continued using horror film samples. In early 2007, Joey-Tekk left and Rayne, who had contributed to the previous album, joined. That year, the band debuted a new logo alongside *The Crypt Injection*, which included the first music video, for "Torture Device," directed by Bahemoth. During this period, Dawn of Ashes also produced remixes for acts like Suicide Commando, Grendel, and Regenerator.

In late 2008, the band announced a shift to melodic black metal. Bathory, a longtime fan of heavier metal, felt the time was right for this change. New members Abaddon Mauvais, Cyanide, and Orias joined. Further lineup changes in 2010 brought Rahab and Volkar Kael for *Genocide Chapters*, released on Metal Blade Records to strong reviews. The album marked the band's transition from aggrotech to melodic death metal. Rahab left later in 2010 and was replaced by Othuum, who toured with the band on the Darkness Reborn Tour alongside Dimmu Borgir, Enslaved, and Blood Red Throne, expanding the band's audience.

Before leaving Metal Blade, Dawn of Ashes released the EP *Farewell to the Flesh*, which reintroduced electronic elements. Shortly after, Othuum and Volkar Kael departed due to creative differences, with no hard feelings. Bathory confirmed Rayne would stay and that he would again control the band's creative direction. A video for "Fuck Like You're in Hell" was also produced. In 2012, guitarist Syrus joined, and industrial music veteran Chris Vrenna produced a substantial amount of material, resulting in the 2013 album *Anathema*.
