Plot
Mary is brought to a hospital with a traumatic brain injury. Though awake, she cannot move and can only answer yes or no questions by blinking. She communicates to her nurse that a supernatural being threw her from a window in an attempt to kill her. When the nurse steps out for assistance, the entity appears and shoves her hospital bed toward a window. The nurse returns in time to stop it, but the entity then murders both of them.
Production
Blink was the debut project from the Scream Gems Horror Lab, a program launched by Sony Pictures' Screen Gems. Filmed in just two days before the COVID-19 pandemic, it was directed by Spenser Cohen, who wrote the screenplay with Anna Halberg, a fellow student from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The project began as a feature film, but after producer Scott Glassgold invited them to join the Scream Gems initiative, Cohen and Halberg reworked it into a short proof of concept. Glassgold also suggested Sophie Thatcher for the lead role, having worked with her on Prospect. Cohen drew inspiration from a personal episode of sleep paralysis, where he heard a noise in the dark. For visual ideas, he studied Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window and the films of James Wan. The low budget and tight schedule made the practical effects especially challenging.
