History
Spymob started out in Minneapolis in the early 1990s under the name Reno. The lineup featured John Ostby on vocals and keyboards, Christian Twigg on bass, guitarist Brent Paschke, and drummer Eric Fawcett. They played local spots like the 400 Bar and cut several demos that later surfaced as the collection Basement Tapes. In 2001, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo heard an early demo and became fans, leading the Neptunes’ Star Trak label to sign the band. Spymob was then brought on as both the opening act and backing band for N.E.R.D., and they helped re-record the In Search of... album to give it a live rock sound before its global release in 2002. After label complications involving Star Trak, Arista, and L.A. Reid, the group landed with Ruthless Records and put out Sitting Around Keeping Score in 2004.
