Apples and Bananas

A North American children's song that playfully changes vowel sounds.

"Apples and Bananas" is a traditional North American children's song that alters the vowels of words in successive verses. It is also known as "Oopples and Boo-noo-noos." The first verse typically begins with the line "I like to eat, eat, eat apples and bananas." Subsequent verses replace most or all vowels with a single vowel sound, usually the long sounds of A, E, I, O, and U. The song has been recorded by several artists, including Scottish musicians Cilla Fisher and Artie Trezise on their 1982 album and book "The Singing Kettle," and Canadian musician Raffi on his 1985 album "One Light, One Sun." It appeared on the children's television program "Barney & Friends" and on "Sesame Street" in an animated 2019 version featuring Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and Grover.
