Plot summary

Several weeks after returning to Kansas, Dorothy Gale sees a rainbow approaching her and Toto. Glinda appears and tells Dorothy she must return to Oz to save the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. Dorothy and Toto reclaim the silver shoes but find a note from Glinda and Princess Ozma stating the shoes cannot take her across the Impassable Desert due to lost power. They arrive in Oz, where Dorothy carries a small mirror, a safety pin, a glass bottle, and four of Aunt Em's homemade oatmeal cookies. A molasses-covered owl named Wiser directs her to Candy County and the Great Royal Marshmallow. After being arrested for picking a lollipop, Dorothy helps the Marshmallow with a stomach ache and receives supplies. At Princess Gayelette's palace, the Jester welcomes them, saying the princess and Prince Quelala vanished during a haunted party. Inside the palace, Dorothy finds the Wicked Witch's wand. The Jester holds the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Cowardly Lion, and China Princess prisoner but agrees to let them accompany Dorothy to Glinda, provided Toto stays behind.
