The series takes place on the fictional world of Terahnar, with most action on the island continent of Lydar, renamed Solidar at the end of book 7, Antiagon Fire. The first three books (Imager, Imager's Challenge, Imager's Intrigue) follow Rhennthyl, a portrait painter who discovers he is an imager, set in 743 A.L. Books four through eight are a prequel arc set in 5 A.L., introducing Quaeryt, an orphan raised in the Scholarium who helps Lord Bhayar unite the four kingdoms of Lydar into Solidar, establishing the Collegium on Imagisle. The chronology restarts at 0 A.L. with Solidar's founding.

Reader's Guide

The Imager Portfolio spans three story arcs: the initial trilogy (books 1-3) from Rhennthyl's viewpoint; the prequel arc (books 4-8) focusing on Quaeryt, the most powerful imager; and the final arc (books 9-12) shared between Alastar, an imager and organizer, and Prince Charyn, a non-imager with hints of prescience. The series explores social and technological evolution, from medieval-style holdings and serfdom in the prequel era to an industrial revolution with cannons and steam engines in later books. Six of the first seven books were nominated for David Gemmell Awards, and Princeps and Imager's Battalion were New York Times best sellers. The entire series is available in multiple formats, narrated by William Dufris for Tantor Audio.
