The Halfblood Chronicles

The Halfblood Chronicles is a fantasy series co-authored by Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey, set in a world populated by elves, wizards, and dragons. Tor Books originally published three installments: *Elvenbane* (1991), *Elvenblood* (1995), and *Elvenborn* (2002). A planned fourth book, *Elvenbred*, was never finished after Norton’s death in 2005. In 2025, Arc Manor obtained the rights to reissue the first three books and to release the completed *Elvenbred*, which was finished by Mercedes Lackey and Ben Ohlander. That final volume is scheduled for publication in March 2027.

The first novel, *Elvenbane*, came out on November 1, 1991. In this story, elves have entered the human world through a portal from their own realm, Evelon, and now rule over humans as slaves and livestock. A dragon-spread prophecy foretells that a halfblood will spark a revolution. Serina Daeth, a concubine of Elven-lord Dyran, becomes pregnant after another concubine tampers with her food to sabotage her. Since halfblood children are forbidden, Serina flees into the desert, where the dragon shaman Alara delivers her child, Shana, and raises her alongside her own son, Keman. Later, Shana is cast out from the dragon clan and enters elven territory, where she is rescued by the dragon Keman and later meets the halfblood wizards. These halfbloods possess mental powers (telekinesis, telepathy) from their human side and matter-shaping abilities from their elven side, and are called wizards. Shana joins a hidden wizard enclave, learns magic, and after leading a group of young wizards to rescue human children marked for culling, she exposes the wizards’ existence, sparking a war for survival against the Elven Lords.

*Elvenblood* was released on June 1, 1995. Shana and her coalition of halfblood wizards, escaped human slaves, and dragon shamans have won a battle against the elves. A hidden group called the Iron People has avoided detection by the elven lords, though how they have survived so long remains unknown. As revolt brews across the elven world, Shana meets the Iron People and uncovers a secret that could either free her people or destroy them. She receives help from Lady Shayana an Treves and her brother Lorryn, who flee their father’s estate because their group includes a halfblood—a dangerous fact as lords now hunt for such individuals.
