Lore & Background

The series follows newlyweds John and Sally Burton after John discovers that Sally has extrasensory perception (ESP) and can read other people's minds. As the season progressed, Sally's ESP became less of a plot point. The cast included Sally Field as Sally Burton, John Davidson as John Burton, Jack Sheldon as Jerry, Zohra Lampert as Anne, with Stephanie Edwards appearing as Angela in one episode, Henry Jones as Owen Metcalf in one episode, Teri Garr as Amber in one episode, and William Windom as Stuart Kline in one episode.

Reader's Guide

Despite airing after the popular Sanford and Son on Friday nights on NBC, The Girl with Something Extra failed to find an audience and was canceled at the end of the season because of low ratings. The show ranked 59th out of 80 shows that season with a 15.2 rating. A total of 22 half-hour episodes were produced. The series later aired reruns on GetTV from 2017 to 2018, and was also seen on Decades (now Catchy Comedy) as part of their 'Sally Field Binge' along with The Flying Nun and Gidget. It also aired on MeTV+ until its removal in 2025. The show represents a transitional role for Sally Field between her earlier comedic roles and her later dramatic work.
