Charles Nelson Reilly plays Claymore Gregg, the captain's great-nephew, who rents the cottage without revealing it is haunted. Central to the series is the romantic tension between the captain and Mrs. Muir, as they navigate their differences—he a 19th-century chauvinist and she a modern career woman—through mutual attraction and compromise.

The show was developed by Jean Holloway and filmed at the Hollywood Studios. Despite Lange's consecutive Emmy wins, the series struggled in ratings. During its first year on NBC, it followed Get Smart and competed with My Three Sons on CBS and The Lawrence Welk Show on ABC. NBC cancelled the series in spring 1969, but ABC picked it up for a second season, scheduling it Thursday nights at 7:30 pm in September 1969, followed by That Girl and Bewitched. It failed to beat CBS's Family Affair, and after a move to Friday nights at 8:30 pm in January 1970, ratings did not improve, leading to ABC's cancellation in spring 1970.

Charles Nelson Reilly was initially engaged only for the first episode's rental sequence, but after working with him, Hope Lange recommended his part become recurring for added comedic opportunities, particularly his terror of the Captain. The cast also included Kellie Flanagan as Candace Muir, Harlen Carraher as Jonathan Muir, and the dog Scruffy as the family's Wire Fox Terrier.
