A young knight must recover Excalibur to earn his place at the Round Table.

Last updated

Adventures of Sir Galahad is a 1949 serial released by Columbia Pictures, directed by Spencer Gordon Bennet. It is notable as one of the few period serials of its era that was not a western, drawing instead on Arthurian legend. The cast includes George Reeves, Nelson Leigh, William Fawcett, Hugh Prosser, and Lois Hall.

Plot

The Arthurian film cycle began with this serial. After defeating Sir Bors and Sir Mordred in tournament, King Arthur agrees to knighthood only if Galahad guards Excalibur for one night. The sword is stolen by the Black Knight, whose possession of Excalibur endangers Arthur's sovereignty. Galahad suspects the Black Knight is a traitor within Camelot allied with the Saxons, while Morgan le Fay helps him against Merlin and the Saxons.

Production

The serial was based on Arthurian myth, a setting producer Sam Katzman considered unique for a serial. Katzman said he was prompted to make it after reading a 1948 article about J. Arthur Rank's interest in an Arthurian film, fearing Rank's version would have too much history and not enough action. Katzman chose not to feature the Holy Grail to avoid religious complications and included only a suggestion of romance, as he believed children did not want too much romance.
