History
Lolawolf is fronted by Zoë Kravitz, with drummer, producer, and filmmaker Jimmy Giannopoulos—also of MOTHXR and Pretty Good Dance Moves—on board. The two met as friends in Brooklyn and started making music together, putting out the track "Wanna Have Fun" in May 2013. While Kravitz was in Los Angeles shooting the indie film The Road Within, she asked Giannopoulos to join her; working on the project helped her cope with the intense role of playing an anorexic character.
They recorded songs at night in the home studio of movie producer Bruce Cohen, who happens to be Kravitz’s godfather. Actor and drummer Raviv Ullman was part of the band from 2013 to 2014. Lolawolf made their live debut at Manhattan’s Mercury Lounge in November 2013, then dropped a self-titled EP in February 2014. The band’s name comes from Kravitz’s half-siblings, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf, children of her mother Lisa Bonet and stepfather Jason Momoa.
Turning down major-label deals, they chose to release music through the indie label Innit Recordings via Kobalt Label Services, keeping full creative control. Their first full-length album, Calm Down, came out in October 2014 and was recorded in the Bahamas and Las Vegas. Rapper ASAP Rocky appeared in the video for the 2014 single "Jimmy Franco." Lolawolf opened for Lily Allen, Azealia Banks, Warpaint, and Miley Cyrus on the Australian leg of the Bangerz Tour in late 2014.
They released the five-track EP Every Fuckin Day on June 23, 2015. That year, they toured with Twin Shadow and played festivals including South by Southwest in Austin, Paris Afropunk, and Philadelphia’s Made in America. In 2016, they performed at Lollapalooza, put out the song "Teardrop" featuring Miley Cyrus, and were in the studio working on a follow-up to Every Fuckin Day, reportedly titled Prom.
