Todd McFarlane's Spawn, also known as Spawn: The Animated Series or simply Spawn, is an American adult animated superhero horror television series that aired on HBO from 1997 through 1999 and reran on Cartoon Network's Toonami programming block in Japan. It is the first of two adult animated series (alongside Spicy City) to have premiered on HBO in 1997, both produced by HBO's short-lived animation division, with Todd McFarlane's Spawn being a co-production with Todd McFarlane Entertainment. The series won an Emmy Award in 1998 for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or More).

The series revolves around former Marine Force Recon Lieutenant Colonel Al Simmons, a government assassin betrayed and killed by a man he believed to be his close friend, Chapel, who burned him alive with a flamethrower. Upon his death, Simmons makes a pact with the devil Malebolgia to become a Hellspawn in return for walking the earth again to see his wife Wanda, but is tricked: he returns five years later as a festering, maggot-ridden corpse with a living red cape, his face so malformed he dons a mask. He finds Wanda has married his best friend Terry Fitzgerald and has a daughter, Cyan, and that Jason Wynn—a CIA powerbroker and black market arms dealer—was responsible for his death. Spawn swears to protect Wanda and her new family.
